Meanwood Guided Walk
5 September 2009

Weir and Sluice GateGuided by Dave Wheldrake of WYAS, to walk started in Meanwood Park with a look a t a standing stone known as, amongst others, the Witches Stone which no one seems to have any idea of where it originated.  At the north end of the Park we cross the ‘Canalised’ beck where a weir and sluice gate was used for the Tanning industry, (hence the street names).

Remainsof Scotland MillWe followed the route of the Meanwood Valley Trail northwards into Scotland Wood viewing the Victorian ‘Scotland Mill’ ruins and the water holding area and weir with it’s sluice gate.

Continuing north we past the Seven Arch Bridge, (which is actually a aqueduct), through  the Crags and Quarries in the woods and reaching the ‘Slathering Baby Slathering Baby’!  This is a spring head of unknown origin with a head set in an arch.

A look at a prehistoric carving on a rock in the woods gave us a chance to have a quick rest before heading north again towards Adel.  The church is a ‘Site of Special Interest’ and contains many elements from difAdel Churchferent eras of history including ancient carvings, roman stone coffins and mill stones.

With thanks to Dave for the outing.
